CHCA Football’s Varsity Head Coach Calvin Renfroe has been named the National Christian School Athletic Association (NCSAA) Varsity Football National Coach of the Year.
A nonprofit Christian organization dedicated to pursuing Christ-centered excellence in athletics, NCSAA brings together nearly 600 members schools from across the country on a mission to minister to young people, schools, and communities through sports. National Coach of the Year is awarded once annually in various sports to vetted candidates whose coaching philosophies and personal lives demonstrate an outstanding commitment to honoring God.
“The award to me means that we have an amazing football family at CHCA,” says Coach Renfroe. “Our coaching staff is full of coaches who love Jesus and our players and happen to be elite football instructors as well. This award means we have a team that loves each other and works every day to chase the best version of who God created us to be. It also shines the light on how our families and school administrators provide our players and coaches with incredible support.”
“Calvin is amazing,” says Athletic Director Ryan Betscher. “One conversation with him and you will see why he is deserving of this award. He is missional and points kids to Christ and is elite when it comes to X’s and O’s. He is truly transformational and has elevated our entire athletic program and school!”
Head Varsity Coach since 2023, Coach Renfroe has taken CHCA Football to new heights. His wisdom and Christ-centered leadership have seen the team go 9–1 in back-to-back seasons and bring home two MVC Championship titles. What’s more, individual players have grown as elite athletes, smashing school records including most completions, most passing touchdowns, and most rushing yards in a game.
Coach Renfroe’s focus on grounding the team in God’s word has no doubt impacted the program in incredible ways. He points to Colossians 3:17 and Matthew 5:16 as two verses that have shaped the way coaches and players approach decisions on and off the field.
“CHCA Football exists to glorify God and be a light to others,” he says. “Our program’s core values are biblically based, and we use those to guide our decisions in football and in life. Our No. 1 value is to Live JOYful. This stands for Jesus, Others, Yourself (in that order) while always being thankful.”
As for the future of the program, Coach Renfroe looks forward with hope and anticipation—and with plans to achieve even bigger goals as the seasons progress.
“Our prayer for CHCA Football is that God would continue to bless the ministry as we seek to honor Him in living out Matthew 5:16. It is a great time for CHCA Football as we continue to strive towards heroic goals. Many outside our program might say we are aiming beyond what we are capable,” he says, “but we serve a big God and will continue to strive towards being the best version of who He created us to be and a light on the hill to all in the 513.”
